Remote Reference Magnetotellurics
Features
RRMT — Remote-Reference Magnetotellurics
RRMT is a well-established noise-reduction solution for magnetotelluric exploration.
In complex field environments, local cultural noise from power lines, machinery and infrastructure often contaminates electromagnetic field recordings and degrades MT data quality. To mitigate this issue, one or more remote-reference stations (RRS) are established at quiet locations, geographically distant from the survey area. These remote stations continuously acquire synchronous magnetic time-series alongside the local measurement array.
During data processing, magnetic components from the remote reference station are used as independent reference inputs for impedance tensor estimation. This approach decorrelates local site noise from natural MT signals, significantly suppressing man-made electromagnetic interference. As a result, RRMT delivers more stable apparent resistivity and phase curves, higher data confidence, and expands the applicability of magnetotelluric surveys in industrially disturbed regions.
Key Benefits
- Effectively suppress local man-made electromagnetic noise
- Obtain more stable apparent resistivity-phase curves
- Improve data reliability in noise-prone working areas
